When I wrote the description for the Wanderers workshop, I knew basically what I was going to do, but I didn't know how much fun it would be to actually do it!

This is one of those mixed-media adventures where you really have to trust the process, to learn what the next step is only when you have completed the previous one.

Of course, the are some basics. The construction is simple and straightforward, and actually rather elegant. There is a certain symbolism in using plaster bandages in a spiritual figure that suggests healing. But these little figures start to show a personality of their own almost from the beginning.

Here is a short video clip of how the Wanderers all begin. The photos were taken in recent in-person workshops at my studio and at the Austin School of Fiber Art. You'll be doing the same process, but at your own pace. You can pause the videos at any time to review.

In this video version of the workshop, you'll be looking over my shoulder as I work and make decisions based on all kinds of factors. Most of the choices are good ones, but some just aren't right. Sometimes we have to switch gears. And that's OK!

Here is a look at the two Wanderers that were completed during the course of the workshop. You'll see how that made their journey from cardboard tubes and sticks to the intriguing sculptural forms in this short slide video.

Your Wanderers will look different because you will find your own right answers as you go through the process. I can't wait to see what you create!
