The Listening Vessel
An Objects of Devotion Workshop
What if a vessel could do more than hold objects?
What if it could hold memory, silence, questions, fragments, and the quiet stories we carry within us?
The Listening Vessel is a contemplative mixed-media workshop about creating forms that receive rather than explain — vessels that become symbolic spaces for reflection, intuition, and presence. Using humble, accessible materials such as plaster gauze, cheesecloth, paper, wire, acrylic medium, tissue, found objects, and simple collage elements, you’ll build poetic vessel forms that feel ancient, personal, weathered, and alive.
This workshop is not about perfection or technical mastery. It is about discovery.
As the vessel slowly takes shape, you’ll explore layering, texture, structure, openings, edges, and subtle symbolic details that transform simple materials into meaningful forms.
Some vessels may feel like relics from the forest floor. Others may seem quiet, luminous, architectural, or ceremonial. Each one becomes a conversation between material and intuition.
Throughout the process, we’ll reflect on the idea of listening itself — listening to memory, to materials, to uncertainty, to intuition, and to the stories that emerge when we stop trying to force answers. The small openings, hidden interiors, stitched edges, and fragile surfaces become metaphors for receptivity, attention, and the beauty of the unfinished.
You do not need prior art experience to take this workshop.
The techniques are approachable, adaptable, and deeply open to personal interpretation. Whether you are a mixed-media artist, fiber artist, painter, assemblage artist, journal keeper, or simply someone longing to make meaningful objects with your hands, The Listening Vessel offers a gentle and inspiring creative journey.
This workshop is part of the ongoing Objects of Devotion series — a collection of projects centered on meaningful making, quiet symbolism, and the transformative power of humble materials.
